Sodium saccharin (benzoic sulfimide) is an artificial sweetener with effectively no food energy. Saccharin is an artificial sweetener with effectively no food energy. It is about 300–400 times as sweet as sucrose but has a bitter or metallic aftertaste, especially at high concentrations. Saccharin is used to sweeten products such as drinks, candies, cookies, and medicines.
An often overlooked Sweet 'N Low danger is that it can cause allergic reactions. Saccharin is a sulfonamide compound which can cause allergic reactions in people that can't tolerate sulfa drugs. Common allergic reactions include breathing difficulties, headaches, skin irritation, and diarrhea.
Saccharin can be used similarly to table sugar to sprinkle onto food, such as cereal or fruit, or used as a sugar substitute in coffee or when baking. Saccharin is a zero-calorie artificial sweetener. It's 300–400 times sweeter than sugar and commonly used to replace it.
