Paint thinners are a mixture of solvents that can dissolve paint and reduce the viscosity of paint for use in sprayer applicators or when simply needing a thinner mixture to work with. Because they dissolve paint they aid in the removal of paint on brushes, rollers and general cleanup of spills or splatters. Paint that has been left open will begin to harden and dry and become thicker. Thinner can counteract this.
According to a study conducted by our in the house R&D department, we found out single solvents are not effective paint thinner as their HS parameter is less. Thereby to achieve the maximum result we have a mixture of solvents which add up the HS Parameter due to which the difference in the energy density is less which facilitates better dissolution. There was a significant change in the dispersion, polarity and hydrogen bonding of the solvent in a mixture form.
For general purpose thinning a 3:1 ratio of paint thinner should be used. This ratio shall vary with the method of application, a technique used or desire of consistencies. When one needs to spray paint the ratio of paint thinner should be higher so that the nozzle does not get clogged. For best application always store paint at room temperature and test the consistency of paint and paint thinner before starting the project. And do remember to clean your tools with paint thinner after the project is completed so as to increase the longevity of the tools.
